James Falkiner Technology Analyst

Biography
James Falkiner is a Technology Analyst at IDTechEx, focusing on the latest semiconductor technology. He joined the company in 2023 after graduating from the University of Bristol with a MEng in Electrical and Electronics Engineering with Study in Continental Europe. He spent his third year abroad at IMT Atlantique, France, where he studied embedded and heterogeneous systems. Upon returning to Bristol, his Master's thesis topic was Silicon Nitride Bragg Filters in Photonic Integrated Circuits for Quantum Applications. He has also completed internships at Jump Trading LLC and AECOM, working on physical design of ASIC/SoC developments and intelligent transportation solutions, respectively. He is currently based in the Forest of Dean, England, United Kingdom.
Education
James obtained an MEng (Master of Engineering) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering with Study in Continental Europe from the University of Bristol. During his studies, he gained skills in Robotics, Embedded Systems, Low Carbon Technologies, Silicon Photonics, and Digital Design. He also worked as a part-time teaching assistant for programming and electronics courses, and as a pharmacy advisor in a hospital outpatient pharmacy. He was awarded both the Institution of Engineering and Technology Diamond Jubilee Scholarship, and the Arkwright Scholarship for Future Leaders in Engineering (CIHT). His MEng Research project involved designing and fabricating Silicon Nitride Bragg Filters in photonic integrated circuits for quantum applications using Deep Ultraviolet (DUV) Lithography. His designs were fabricated at the Cornerstone foundry through EPRSC funding.

As part of his integrated 4-year MEng course, James spent a year abroad at IMT Atlantique, a Grande École in Brittany, France, where he studied embedded and heterogeneous systems, primarily in French. On top of this, he learned about satellite systems, radio technology, connected medical devices, French language and culture, and participated in a musical performance with the director of the university. He also completed a several projects, including a group project focusing on Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs) for military helicopter applications, in cooperation with French defence contractor, Thales.
Research
At IDTechEx, James is working in the field of semiconductors with a particular interest in 5G/6G, connected vehicles, and silicon photonic integrated circuits.
